For months, there have been billboards and advertisements letting us know that Brian Regan was coming to town. I’m pretty new to town, and I didn’t realize how insanely popular Brian’s comedy is here in Cache Valley. I watched and listened to his comedy frequently in high school, but it had been a long time since I had seen him, and I was a little apprehensive that I wouldn’t like him as much as I had as a teenager. It turns out I had nothing to worry about, but we’ll get to that.

The show was opened by comedian, Jackie Kashian, and I loved her. She is not as well known as other comics, but she has appeared on Conan twice and was a finalist on Last Comic Standing, so you know she’s got some comedic chops. Jackie opened the show, by first commenting on her own weight. Personally, I thought she was a beautiful woman, but she came out and just said, “Yes, I am overweight. Consider that addressed.” Her frankness with the audience opened us up to her brand of comedy, while also making sure the audience paid attention to what she had to say without getting distracted by her appearance. She joked about her family, being a nerdy kid and frozen foods. She was endlessly relateable, and by the end, I just wanted to hang out with her and her pet iguana. The audience seemed to agree with me, and it seemed that the room truly enjoyed their time with her.

Jackie Kashian on Conan

After Jackie finished her set, it was time for the main event and THE CROWD. WENT. CRAZY!! I had heard how popular Brian Regan was here, but I was not prepared for the level of enthusiasm that I was presented with in that arena. Because I hadn’t listened to any of his comedy for a while, everything in his act was new for me, and I really enjoyed it. The start of the show was really the peak for me, with a slight decline as the show went on, but it was still really enjoyable. Brian joked about the awkwardness that comes from small talk, dating, and the ridiculousness of hunting and fishing as a sport. While he joked about sitting in the woods for days waiting for an animal to wander by, I found myself hunched over in my seat crying with laughter. As a Wyoming girl, I’ve been surrounded by hunters my whole life, but I’ve never understood the appeal. I’m not against hunting, but it seems like the least fun activity you could do and he was hilariously performing my thoughts back to me.

Brian Regan on Letterman

This show was an excellent way to spend an evening, and it was well worth the money. I had a wonderful time, and the crowd seemed to agree. I had nothing to worry about, and even though I hadn’t listened or watched Brian Regan in years, he was just as funny as I remembered him. I found him relateable, but maybe less than Jackie. I think it was based on the fact that she is a woman, which makes me instantly more drawn to her. Jackie was a great time, and I’m so glad that the audience seemed to enjoy her as much as I did. If you didn’t get a chance to attend, you missed out on a great evening, and if Brian comes back to Logan, I’d probably see him again.
