It was March 28, 1998 and I was with the Ute’s at the “Final Four” at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio. After ROUTING defending champion Arizona by 25 points in the Elite 8, the Ute’s faced North Carolina led by All-Americans Vince Carter, and Antawn Jamison. Most of the hundreds of media members thought the Tar Heels would roll over Utah, but I remember thinking the Ute’s had a lot of momentum, and bottom line they had Rick Majerus. We all marveled at his passion, drive, motivation, and preparation. Nobody had his team better prepared to play than Majerus. I recall him leaning on friends like Don Nelson and George Karl for advice and strategy, and sure enough. Led by Andre Miller’s 16 points, 14 rebounds, and 7 assists the Ute’s stunned UNC 65-59 and advanced to the Championship Game where they narrowly lost to Kentucky.
I covered all his games at Utah and hosted his Coaches Show every week on KALL Radio. Oh the stories I could you tell you both “On” and “Off” the air. Rick was tough on his players, assistant coaches, and certain media members, but he always treated me with respect and as a friend. He was one of a kind, and I’ll always treasure those memories of Majerus and the “Runnin’ Ute’s”.
